I'm not normally too sentimental. Because you know, emotions are so uncool (that's called self-depecrating irony, for those of you who have never spoke to a douchebag hipster). In any case, I tend to shy away from sappy shows of love, whether it be for people, ideas, or countries. I think you see where this is going.
In any case, even my unwaveringly cynical self could not help but sing but be inspired by the sight of red, white, and blue in the night sky. Not just inspired in a general way though, but inspired enough to sing to the mother of sentimental nationalistic odes... Proud to be an American. Sing, with tears in my eyes.
But honestly, I think I've earned the right to a little mushiness. I AM proud to be an American, and being undocumented has definitely given me a different perspective on what it means to be an American.
There's definitely some bitterness at times, knowing that I have to fight for something so many take for granted. But ultimately, being undocumented makes me glad that I call this country home. It may be unjust that so many of us have to go without the benefits that come from being an American, but at least we're given a fighting chance. And I honestly believe we're going to see our work pay off.
