That's the opening line from Pablo Neruda's Love Sonnet LXVI.
I've always loved this particular poem of his, because it speaks to the depth and complexity of love. The fire that consumes one is often romanticized, but it is not always a rosy experience. Anywho, I recorded the poem -- in the original Spanish-- for Read To Me Tuesday a couple of days ago, on my other blog, Things My Brother Says. Enjoy here.

I know this is a horrible thing to say, especially because I'm supposed to be... "arty", but I just really don't get poetry. I acknowledge that it's good for poetry to exist... but I just don't "get" it.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting comment. Do you mean you don't get the point of poetry in general, or you don't "get" specific poems?
ReplyDeleteI think I get the point of poetry in the general sense. It's another medium for self-expression, and I can understand why people might to be drawn to writing and appreciating poetry. I'm also really glad that poetry exists, and I myself might even occasionally write a really lame and ambiguous poem.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I have yet to find a poem that I "get". I read it, understand the words, and go, "Well, okay then." I don't know.. maybe it's because I don't know how to properly analyze and deconstruct it in way that could lead to something profound. I'm sure it's very much like fine art in this sense; I need to be aware of its discourse in order to truly understand and be appreciative of it.
I think that may be part of it. I also think that the "point" of some poems is the poem itself, the simple aesthetic of the words said out loud.
ReplyDeleteHi! Why is it that no DREAMers are updating their blogs, gah! I hope you read this. I recently started a blog called "At least I have chicken", http://atleastihavechicken.blogspot.com/ , and I'm hoping that DREAMers will participate in this stupid, random, non-political, and comedic blog. Please email me at alien.ille@gmail.com for more info!
